Sports Massage
Sports Massage is an effective deep soft tissue treatment to help relieve muscle tension, break down adhesion’s and mobilise soft tissues to help reduce pain. Although referred to as a ‘Sports Massage’, the treatment is not limited to athletes and can be applied to anyone in both a sporting and non-sporting context if there is a need for general relaxation of the musculoskeletal system. For example, those who sit at a desk for long periods of time.
You can expect a variety of techniques to be used during your treatment depending on what your specific problem area is:
Kneading - Involves the lifting, squeezing and moving of tissues which helps to speed up the pressure of blood flow so that waste products can be removed and the fresh blood delivers oxygen and nutrients.
Trigger Pointing - A trigger point is a small area of irritability located within a muscle or fascia tissue which develop following trauma or when tension develops and tissues are held in a shortened position over a period of time. Trigger pointing in a sports massage treatment aims to deactivate trigger points, relieve pain and muscle tightness and help return physiological function of muscles.
Wringing - Where tissue is lifted away from the bone and pushed from side to side as the hands move up and down in order to stretch tight fascia and muscle fibres to release tension and mobilise large muscles. Like the kneading technique, wringing increases blood circulation to the area, removes waste products and brings oxygen and nutrients to the area in order to improve tissue condition but this technique also helps to improve tissue elasticity and extensibility.

You may feel sore and tender for a few days and there may be inflammation around the treated areas. It is common to feel pain the following day which is caused by the rush of fresh blood to the treated muscles and toxins that have been flushed from the area which the body will metabolise.

Sports massage is a form of deep tissue massage, therefore can be uncomfortable. The more tense your muscles are, the more uncomfortable it may feel as more pressure is required to stretch or manipulate the muscle. Always tell you therapist if you are in a high level of pain and less pressure can be applied.

No this is a common misconception. Sports massage is suitable for everyone from desk workers who have spent long periods of time in one position to tradesmen who have put constant load and strain through their muscles. Sports massage can help relieve soreness and tension that remedial massage can't.
